What Is Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal is a dental procedure used to save a tooth that is severely infected or damaged. Inside your tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma, root canal treatment is necessary to remove the infected tissue and preserve the tooth.

The Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

Save Your Natural Tooth

Root canal treatment allows you to keep your natural tooth, avoiding the need for extraction.

Say Goodbye to Tooth Pain

By removing the infected pulp, root canal treatment eliminates the source of your toothache and provides pain relief.

Prevent Future Infections

The procedure cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, then seals it to reduce the chance of infection returning.

Restore Function

Once the tooth is restored with a crown, you can chew and speak normally.

Our Step-by-Step Process

Here is what each stage of treatment usually involves. Your dentist will talk you through anything that differs in your case.

  1. 01

    Diagnosis

Dr. Koushyar and Dr. Fares use advanced imaging to assess the extent of infection and plan your treatment.

  2. 02

    Treatment

The infected tissue inside the tooth is cleaned out with fine instruments. Tell your dentist at any point if you feel anything beyond pressure.

  3. 03

    Restoration

After removing the infection, we seal your tooth and typically protect it with a crown to restore its strength and function.

Dr. Eric and Dr. Angela are beyond the best dentists I have ever experienced. I have been to another practice and it was a horrible experience. I had a root canal from that former dentist who left to roots behind which caused an infection, and lead me to have to pay a specialist in San Diego to correct the problem. When I started going back to the Dr. Velk’s, I realized that phenomenal dentists DO exist. Dr. Eric just perform the second root canal I’ve ever had, and it was pain-free and beautiful. Dr. Angela is always so attentive and kind when I go in for my regular cleanings. I am a huge scaredy-cat of going to the dentist but because of these 2 dentists, I no longer fear it. My experience at Bear Creek was horrible, but my experience at Velk as been tremendous. Thank you so much for helping me stay pain-free. I will never go anywhere else, ever again.

Spending nearly 10 years looking for the right dentist, I am so grateful to find Velk Family Dentistry. So many other dentists I've been to in the inland empire I felt we're trying to rip me off like saying I needed 3 crowns and giving me 4 different pricing options and etc. It felt like I was buying a car! Doctor Eric is so personable, gentle, and most important, upfront and explains the details to you that I felt so comfortable and confident under his care. Plus he performs root canals and crowns himself! All the other dentists I've seen always referred me to a specialist but this man does it all! That's how skilled he is! The same night after I did my root canal he even called me personally to make sure everything felt fine and that I was doing good. You cannot go wrong making Velk Family Dentistry your family dentist! From someone who is afraid of the dentist, I highly recommend coming here.

How many appointments are needed for a root canal?

In some cases, requires two appointments; one appointment to identify the need for the root canal, and one appointment to carry out the treatment. This does occur sometimes, but not always; a root canal can be finished in one visit when possible. It is always our goal to get our patients out of pain or discomfort as quickly as possible.

What are the alternatives to a root canal?

The only other option is to remove it – though it is always better to preserve the natural tooth rather than remove it.

How can I avoid needing a root canal?

Root canals are needed when the tooth has sustained a large amount of damage or decay. To avoid it, be sure to keep up with brushing and flossing twice daily, as well as your regular dental check-up and cleanings. Avoid sugary and acidic foods and beverages. If you play contact sports, always ensure that you wear a mouthguard.

Do root canals hurt?

It is a common misconception that root canal treatment hurts. The reality is that root canals help relieve the source of your tooth pain rather than cause additional discomfort. In fact, root canal treatment is like any routine dental treatment. The teeth are numbed with a local anesthetic beforehand so that you won't have to feel anything more than a little pressure. Additional local anesthetic can be used if your tooth feels sensitive. Because abscessed teeth can interfere with local anesthetic's ability to work properly, our dentist may prescribe an antibiotic for you to take leading up to your appointment. The antibiotic will reduce any swelling or drainage so that numbing medications work more effectively. Just remember that the antibiotic will not prevent any reinfection, so a root canal will still be required.

How do I care for a tooth after a root canal?

After root canal treatment, your mouth might be slightly sensitive where the local anesthetic was placed, or from having your tooth propped open for a while. Treatment removes the infected nerve, so the tooth itself can no longer transmit pain or sensitivity. Floss and brush around it daily and keep to regular checkups. A protective crown helps reduce wear or breakage, since the tooth will be more brittle than before.

How much does a root canal cost?

A root canal costs about as much as a crown or bridge, but it can save you the larger cost of an extraction and replacing the tooth later. Depending on which tooth needs treatment and how many roots it has, a typical root canal runs between $500 and $1,500. We will check what your insurance covers and explain it before you go ahead, and payment plans are available.
