What Is Periodontal Care?

Periodontal care focuses on the health of your gums and the supporting structures of your teeth. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss. Periodontal care aims to prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease to preserve your oral health.

The Benefits of Periodontal Care

Prevents Gum Disease

Regular checkups and cleanings are essential for preventing gum disease and maintaining healthy gums.

Treats Gum Disease

We offer a range of treatments for gum disease, from scaling and root planing to more advanced procedures.

Saves Teeth

Periodontal care can help save teeth that are at risk due to gum disease.

Improves Oral Health

Healthy gums contribute to overall oral health and can even impact your general health.

Freshens Breath

Periodontal treatment can help eliminate bad breath caused by gum disease.

Our Step-by-Step Process

Here is what each stage of treatment usually involves. Your dentist will talk you through anything that differs in your case.

Request an Appointment
  1. 01

    Periodontal assessment

We measure around each tooth, check for bleeding and recession, and take images where they are needed.

  2. 02

    Reviewing the findings

We explain what the measurements show and whether it points to gingivitis or to periodontitis.

  3. 03

    Treatment

Care may involve changes to home cleaning and professional treatment such as scaling and root planing. More advanced disease may need referral to a periodontist.

  4. 04

    Ongoing maintenance

After treatment, regular visits monitor your gums and manage buildup. Your schedule may be more frequent than for someone with healthy gums.

Signs You May Need Periodontal Care

  • Red or swollen gums — Inflamed gums that appear swollen or red are common early signs of gum disease.

  • Bleeding or tender gums — Gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing can indicate gingivitis or more advanced stages of gum disease.

  • Persistent bad breath — Chronic bad breath that doesn’t improve with oral hygiene could be a sign of gum disease, as bacteria build up and produce foul-smelling gases.

  • Gum recession — As gum disease progresses, you may notice that your gums are receding or pulling away from the teeth.
