- Plaque
- A soft, sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. Brushing and cleaning between teeth remove it; left in place it can harden into tartar.
- Tartar (Calculus)
- Hardened plaque that has mineralized onto the tooth surface. It is removed by a dental professional using instruments.
- Scaling
- Removing plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and just below the gumline using hand or ultrasonic instruments.
- Prophylaxis
- A routine professional cleaning for a patient whose oral health is suited to that type of preventive care. The recommended timing is individual.
- Gingivitis
- Gum inflammation associated with plaque buildup. Your dentist will explain what your findings mean and what care may help.
- Root Planing
- Treatment of affected root surfaces as part of scaling and root planing for periodontal disease.
- Periodontal Maintenance
- Ongoing professional care after periodontal treatment, with a schedule based on the patient's condition.
- Polishing
- A step at the end of a cleaning that smooths the tooth surface and can remove some surface stains.
- Fluoride Treatment
- A topical fluoride application that helps strengthen enamel. Whether it is appropriate depends on your cavity risk.
